The Week in Review

Winter weather descended on the Memphis area with snow and sleet this weekend. The Daily Memphian’s metro coverage was similarly blanketed over the past week by the storm’s forecasts, preparation, incoming and aftermath. Memphis largely escaped the worst of the weather, dodging the freezing rain that’s caused havoc on power grids to our south and to our east. But the frigid temps are poised to affect schedules for at least a week. Stay tuned to The Daily Memphian’s ongoing coverage for weather-related information and closures.

Outside of the wintry mix, check out these stories:

  • Rep. John Gillespie, R-Memphis, and Sen. Brent Taylor, R-Eads, are sponsoring the Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act, which would require District Attorney General Steve Mulroy to report on certain actions (including plea agreements and reduced charges) tied to felony cases originating from two federal initiatives — Operation Viper or the Memphis Safe Task Force.
  • U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem invoked Memphis Saturday as the DHS sought to explain federal officers killing 37-year-old Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
  • More Memphis-Shelby County Schools buildings could get improvements funded by Elon Musk. Last summer, the billionaire’s artificial intelligence company xAI offered to fund and manage other school improvement projects in Westwood and Whitehaven near its data centers; now the Musk Foundation has proposed funding upgrades at three elementary schools in Frayser.
  • Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Matt Perry reported last week to members of the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee that the agency’s presence in Memphis and Shelby County will remain near its current level even after the MSTF departs.
