Before we get started, an important announcement that comes with an invitation: The Daily Memphian sports staff is talking sports, and we want you to visit with us as we do.
So … make plans now to join us at Wiseacre HQ, the popular brewing company’s downtown location at 398 South B.B. King Blvd., for a panel event on Memphis sports moderated by Geoff Calkins. The get-together is planned for 5 p.m. on March 31, a Tuesday. You can ask our sports staff members all your questions and connect with other Grizzlies and Tigers fans. Guests will receive one complimentary drink and enjoy a charcuterie board, with additional beverages and food available for purchase. This event is free with a suggested donation to help support our work. Here’s a link with more info.
Now on to our regular business …
If you hadn’t heard, pro tennis is returning to Memphis. Frank Bonner II and Geoff Calkins were there when the announcement was made Monday.
Also if you haven’t heard, the Rhodes College men’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Drew Hill was there when that announcement was made, also on a busy Monday.
Meanwhile, the Tigers basketball team continues to struggle.
Parth Upadhyaya was there when Memphis lost last Sunday at East Carolina. John Martin also wrote after the Tigers lost to ECU, while Tim Buckley penned a piece following last Thursday night’s home loss to Wichita State.
Speaking of being places, John Varlas will be there when the Briarcrest boys, Hutchinson girls and St. George’s boys basketball teams all begin Division 2 Final Four play later this week in Clarksville. Varlas profiled Hutchison’s Ava Jones, a Miss Basketball finalist, earlier today.
As for the Grizzlies, tonight they visit Minnesota, where Herrington will be on the scene, while home games are scheduled Wednesday night against Portland and Saturday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Hill’s recent piece on “who has the edge in NBA’s reverse standings race” is worth checking out if you missed it.
Finally, did you hear that the Daily Memphian sports staff — with Hill leading the way — collected a haul of Top 10 honors in last week’s annual APSE writing, photography and digital contest?
Here’s a lot of the top work from the past week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
