The Week in Prep Sports

March kicked off with one of the maddest state tournament games ever this week.

Briarcrest will play for a Division 2-AA state title for the fourth straight season, thanks to a pulse-pounding four-overtime victory over a strong Knoxville Catholic team. Sophomore Josh Huggins and senior Mr. Basketball finalist Fred Smith led the way for the Saints.

In girls play, the season came to an end for a young Hutchison team, which was in the final four for the first time since 2021.

And with spring sports also getting underway in Tennessee, it’s an extremely busy time on the calendar. So, as always, we need your help in spotlighting our best athletes.

Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by e-mailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or via Twitter @johnvarlas.
