Two resolutions that would have changed the City of Memphis’ information technology department appeared on — and then quickly disappeared from — City Council agendas in February and March. The Daily Memphian’s Samuel Hardiman reported on a collection of emails and other documents that pointed to City Council Chairwoman Jana Swearengen-Washington’s behavior related to that legislation and to a set of staff firings. Memphis Mayor Paul Young’s administration warned Swearengen-Washington that her behavior could violate the city charter.

Eight appointees to the new board set to take control of Memphis-Shelby County Schools later this summer bring expertise in corporate or philanthropic management, with backgrounds in construction, medicine, marketing, law and — with the appointment of a former Memphis superintendent and leader of Tennessee’s most influential education policy organization — K-12 school systems and charter schools. The Daily Memphian’s Laura Testino profiled each of the eight appointees announced so far; one appointment remains before the board of nine’s composition is complete.
