And earlier in the week, a newly released autopsy revealed that a 20-year-old killed by Tennessee National Guard members was shot in the back. The Guard, meanwhile, paused patrols Friday for what officials said was “administrative work”; however, Gov. Bill Lee said the troops remain deployed in Memphis.

Shelby County could soon see crime‑scene DNA results in under two hours thanks to rapid‑testing technology — a major shift for investigators. Outgoing County Mayor Lee Harris wrapped up his time in office with a farewell portrait and a new job at Ole Miss, spending his final days focused on transition and legacy. And in county government, leaders say they don’t want to pick up former clerk Wanda Halbert’s legal tab. 

On the education front, TCAP school-level scores are out, showing a widespread dip in performance across Memphis‑area schools. Germantown is weighing a plan that would let residents’ grandchildren attend city schools tuition‑free. And at Holy Rosary, parents and students pushed back — and it worked. Chris Mullis will return as principal.
