Wow, what a start to the Charles Huff era. Huff’s Memphis Tigers football team hit the road for his debut after succeeding the new Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield and rallied from a halftime deficit to beat UNLV 27-21 on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Frank Bonner II and photographer Patrick Lantrip made the trip to Vegas to document the win, highlighting The Daily Memphian sports team’s coverage for the week. Lantrip captured a picture-perfect image of new Tigers starting quarterback Marcus Stokes flying through the air during the win, and Bonner told the tale of how Stokes’ family members sat in the stands to watch the West Florida transfer play his first NCAA Division I game. John Martin made his predictions involving Huff and the rest of the 2026 college football season before the game, and Geoff Calkins put Huff’s first win at Memphis in perspective after the game. Bonner’s pregame feature on well-traveled Tigers fan John Stacy also is well worth the read. Meanwhile, John Varlas and intern Ian Sparks have kept readers well-informed with high school fall sports play now fully underway. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work from the week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
