It’s Halloween week, and basketballs are in the air.

The Memphis Grizzlies are on quite a roll, having won four in a row to open the 2026-27 NBA season with — as Drew Hill and Chris Herrington have been chronicling — Ty Jerome off to an incredibly hot start.

The Grizzlies wrap up an early Western road swing Thursday night in Portland against Ja Morant, before returning home to face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night at FedExForum.

The Memphis Tigers, meanwhile, looked good in their exhibition opener last Friday night at Mississippi State, as Frank Bonner II reported from the road. The team is preparing to play its second and final preseason game Wednesday night at Arkansas, whose coach, former Tigers coach John Calipari, is finally starting to get warmly welcomed back to Memphis, as Tim Buckley wrote.

Bonner and Buckley were at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium last Thursday night when the Memphis Tigers football team rallied to beat East Carolina in overtime behind the play of quarterback Marcus Stokes.

Stokes rebounded from a rough earlier outing at Tulane to spark the Tigers, who have a Halloween night date with Army on Saturday at Liberty Stadium.

Prep reporter John Varlas was in Murfreesboro to chronicle another state volleyball title for Briarcrest, and he is in Chattanooga this week as Collierville, Houston and Lausanne compete for state titles in girls soccer.

Here’s a look at some of the staff’s work from the week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
