The 2021 football season was a memorable one for MAHS.

The Lions won a school-record 11 games and advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in program history, falling to eventual state champion Martin Westview. Fourteen starters are back from that squad and the team still harbors title aspirations. Only they’ll chase that dream at another school.

Following the closure of the North Memphis charter school at the end of the school year, coach Cedric Miller landed the job at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, a 1A program that went 3-6 in 2021. As a result of the closure, the players were free to transfer anywhere and those 14 starters — along with others — followed Miller to MASE. The injection of talent instantly makes the Phoenix a contender in the state’s smallest public-school classification and players say they are looking forward to the challenge. — John Varlas
