Much has changed in the world since 2016. The fortunes of the Hamilton High football team haven’t — although players are confident they soon will.

The South Memphis school enters the 2022 football season with the longest losing streak in Tennessee, a dismal 40 games. A powerhouse in the 1970s, ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Wildcats defeated Sheffield late in the 2016 season but haven’t won since, including a 2020 campaign canceled by SCS COVID-19 concerns.

This year though there’s a new coach, former assistant Jerel Blanchard, and a relentlessly positive attitude. There’s also some good talent too and the belief within the program is that 2022 will be the year it “shocks the city.” Time well tell on that, but things are certainly looking up. — John Varlas
