A three-judge panel denied a request to slow down implementation of Tennessee’s school voucher law. Last month, the same panel lifted the injunction that had kept the Education Savings Account Act from taking effect since it was passed in 2019. Since then, the state has been working to make taxpayer-funded private school vouchers available in some form by the time class started — which in Shelby County was today.

As the new school year cranks up, area educators share a few (but not all) of their tactics for keeping students safe.

From January to June this year, there were 483 charges against violent juvenile offenders in Shelby County, compared to 298 in the first half last year, and monkeypox has arrived in Shelby County.

If that’s not enough to give you a fever, so far, this is the hottest summer on record for Memphis, and last month was the second-hottest July in the city’s history.

Meanwhile, drivers of electric vehicles will get a boost as MLGW joins a statewide charging network and Memphis streetlights are being converted to LED.

And in Cordova, the USDA euthanized 120 Canada geese at Riverwood Farms, in response to the homeowners association saying it was necessary for the protection of the community, but critics say it’s an inhumane, temporary solution to a problem that requires habitat modification.
