Fallout from the Aug. 4 elections began to be felt last week as Memphis City Council chairwoman Jamita Swearengen resigned, effective immediately, to take the reins as Shelby County Circuit Court Clerk — a role she won in the election. Her resignation from the council sets up a special election on the upcoming Nov. 8 ballot to fill the District 4 council seat. Also related to election results, the City Council shut down consideration of a referendum on partisan primary city elections in the wake of the Nov. 4 defeat of a companion referendum extending term limits. The action means there will be no primary elections before next year’s city elections. Also last week, the Shelby County Commission voted to ask the state Comptroller’s office to investigate and assist the County Clerk’s office, plagued by a backlog of new license plates. Despite the problems, County Clerk Wanda Halbert won reelection Aug. 4. Finally, a zip line adventure park was proposed for Mud Island, with the City Council getting its first look at the proposal by The Forge Memphis. Mayor Jim Strickland gave his backing to the plan. — Metro editor Ron Maxey
