A tragic week for Memphis began with the location of Eliza Fletcher’s body last Monday in South Memphis, three days after she was abducted on Central Avenue near Zach Curlin during an early morning run.

The body was not identified as Fletcher until the following day, and suspect Cleotha Abston was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree murder in perpetration of kidnapping after the identification.

Friday morning, more than a thousand people showed up in the predawn hours to finish the run Fletcher was on at the time of her abduction, and Fletcher was laid to rest Saturday following a funeral at Second Presbyterian Church.

As Memphians were mourning Fletcher, more violence erupted with a Wednesday shooting spree by a gunman on the move. When the day was over, six people had been shot in the rampage, and three died. The suspect, Ezekiel Kelly, was released early from a three-year sentence less than six months ago. — Metro editor Ron Maxey
