The Week in Prep Sports

Houston High has produced plenty of talented girls soccer players over the years. And Ellett Smith is poised to become the next one.
Smith, a sophomore, played a starring role this week in one of the area’s biggest matchups as she scored two goals in the second half to lead the Mustangs to a 3-1 victory over Briarcrest. It was the Saints’ first loss of the season while keeping Houston undefeated.
Both of those teams harbor state tournament ambitions but there’s still much to play for. Golfers, however, are already qualifying and the best performance was turned in by Cooper Solberg of MUS. He shot 4-under 68 to win the Division 2-AA West Regional tournament while leading the Owls to the team title.
Coaches and stat-keepers are encouraged to send in their scores, highlights and top performers after each game. Email jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or Tweet @johnvarlas. — John Varlas
