There’s plenty of talk about the Memphis defense, particularly the secondary this season, and for good reason.
From COVID-19 holding key members out of games to sluggish starts, it’s been a rough go for the secondary except for one player.
Memphis safety Quindell Johnson is in the midst of a breakout season. Pro Football Focus College ranks Johnson as the highest-graded safety in the nation, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider how Johnson was all over the field against SMU.
It’s in coverage where Johnson has excelled, with a 88.1 coverage grade out of 100. Defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre has also taken advantage of his versatility.
Johnson has played 43 snaps at free safety, 36 as a slot corner and 30 as a box safety. He’s been a bright spot and, if the rest of the secondary can rise up to match his play, we’ll see the defense continue to make strides.
