In case anyone forgot, Ja Morant issued another reminder of his top goal this season.
“Proving everyone wrong is my No. 1 goal,” Morant said Wednesday, which will be a much more difficult task given the current circumstances.
In less than a year, Morant earned the respect of the league’s veterans, won Rookie of the Year, blossomed into an internet phenomenon, led the Grizzlies to one game shy of the playoffs, and (see above) even had a giraffe named after him, for cryin’ out loud.
What could possibly be next?
Answer: A documentary.
According to Hollywood-based media group The Wrap, Morant will be the subject of a six-part documentary series called “Promiseland” that focuses on up and coming rookie athletes. The point guard shared the news on Twitter, retweeting a post that confirmed the series, directed by Dexton Deboree, will come out sometime next year.
Also helping with the series is DLP Media Group, which produced the “30 for 30” film “Lance” and “Rodman: For Better or Worse,” according to The Wrap.
The documentary series will follow the 21-year-old throughout his rookie season, including the NBA’s hiatus and the time of civil unrest throughout the country.
Morant is entering his second season in Memphis with extremely high expectations for the young Grizzlies.
He acknowledged on Wednesday that he has seen NBA playoff predictions by several different media outlets and noted that Memphis was not included.
“It’s motivating,” Morant said. “I know for me it is, and it’s motivating for my teammates as well.”
More from your Insider:
Ja Morant has seen the preseason predictions, which only reinforce his goal: “Proving everyone wrong.”
Morant acknowledged he did not wear a mask the entire time at the All Black Affair, which drew hundreds of attendees.
But there are other issues to confront, among them safety during a pandemic, and an uncomfortably close tax line.
No courtside seats will be available for Tigers games this season. The Grizzlies are still determining seating configurations.
The Grizzlies will play Minnesota and Atlanta twice. The regular-season schedule will not come out until mid-December.
