Welcome back to your Grizzlies Insider, where we deliver the latest NBA news and analysis straight from Daily Memphian staffers Drew Hill, Chris Herrington and Geoff Calkins right to your inbox. Starting today, we’ll be sending the Insider out twice a week until the end of the season.
The Grizzlies stumbled out of the gate to an 0-2 start, but they didn’t trip.
For those who might have missed it Saturday, Memphis is quickly establishing a new Southern rival.
After a preseason game featuring a skirmish between Grizzlies guard Grayson Allen and Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young, the two teams once again went at it on the court and online.
Former Memphis player Solomon Hill was whistled for a flagrant foul in the second half of his team’s victory for taking a swipe at the head of Allen on a fastbreak opportunity. The Grizzlies didn’t appreciate the move and called for the review.
Then, one day after the game, Young posted a video to Twitter of Allen stepping on his foot while trying to trap him in the corner on defense. The Grizzlies thought there was nothing to it, but Young was clearly suggesting it was a continuation of Allen’s tripping antics that earned a suspension at Duke.
“Damn that must have really really hurt. I’m sorry. I hope you’re okay,” Allen tweeted at Young in response. The tweet now has more than 62,000 likes.
Memphis stars Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. also came to Allen’s defense. Jackson called Young’s comment “cap” — a slang term for lying, while Morant posted several pictures and videos with references to being “Bad Boys.”
For now, the Hawks and Grizzlies are not scheduled to meet again in the first half of the season. The league will release the second half of its schedule at a later date.
Here’s to hoping the Grizzlies and Hawks get to bring the trash talk back to the floor sooner than later.
More from your Insider:
Don’t stress about 0-2. Just enjoy Ja Morant’s magic as we await the return of Jaren Jackson Jr. and for the Memphis Grizzlies bench to step up.
Kyle Anderson has 20 points and 14 rebounds for Memphis; both teams opened with dreadful play, and Morant gets rare tech while arguing non-call. The Grizzlies will face the Brooklyn Nets at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Barclays Center.
Trae Young and Ja Morant are two of eight players in NBA history to average 17 points and seven assists before the age of 21.
