Those hoping to attend Tony Allen’s jersey retirement on Jan. 28 at FedExForum will now have to wait to see if it indeed happens.
Allen was charged Thursday, Oct. 7, in the NBA health insurance fraud scheme that made made national headlines. Allegations against him include submitting fraudulent claims for $420,075 of dental and chiropractic work. He has repaid $350,075 of those claims, according to the indictment.
The surprising news will certainly be disappointing to many Grizzlies fans who planned to celebrate the guard this season.
The Grizzlies, understandably, have not yet announced any change of plans regarding the jersey retirement. They also had a commemorative record giveaway planned for that night.
The priority for Allen, however, will be his legal matters. The initial status conference in the case will be held after Oct. 25 in New York City, according to federal documents.
For now, Memphis fans will have to wait to see how this story develops.
