Welcome to this week’s Tigers Basketball Insider. Below you’ll find the latest news and analysis from The Daily Memphian’s Steven Johnson, John Martin and Geoff Calkins.
Just days ahead of the Tigers’ season opener vs. Tennessee Tech, Penny Hardaway and the rest of the Memphis staff were on the road eying key prospects in the 2022 and 2023 class.
That included checking out ‘22 five-star Zion Cruz and ‘23 five-star Rob Dillingham for Donda Academy, Kanye West’s recently launched prep school.
The rapper and fashion mogul was also present courtside for the season debut. Cruz and Dillingham both performed well, stuffing the stat sheet in a close loss to Minnesota Prep.
Cruz is one of the Tigers’ top targets left on the board for 2022 while Memphis is currently battling Kentucky and others for Dillingham.
Next, Hardaway and the staff headed to Duncanville, Texas for The Scrimmage. That featured ‘23 five-star Rob Holland and Hardaway’s son, Ashton.
Ashton Hardaway is a 6-foot-7 forward rated as a Top 150 prospect in 2023. Holland recently took an official visit to Memphis and is another priority target.
Per 247Sports analyst Eric Bossi, Ashton Hardaway had a strong showing and could be a fast riser in 2023. Bossi said Ashton has a chance to be one of the elite shot makers in his class.
That’s high praise for Hardaway’s son and of course, he’ll be a prospect to watch for next year.
