“The Goodbye Levee” at TheatreWorks @ the Square and livestreaming, through Jan. 30:

Mike Solomonson’s “The Goodbye Levee” was a 2020 winner of Playhouse on the Square’s annual national playwriting competition NewWorks@TheWorks. Each year, two plays are selected to be fully produced in upcoming seasons and streamed nationwide. “The Goodbye Levee” premise revolves around character Celeste Banks’ “Goodbye Party,” which is subject to her “erratic memory and hallucinatory interruptions.” Irene Crist directs. The link to live streaming is here. “Walking Tall” at Crosstown Theater, Thursday:

A modern Tennessee legend made a quick trip to the big screen with “Walking Tall,” the 1973 film in which Joe Don Baker played Buford Pusser, the wooden-club-wielding McNairy County sheriff (1964-1970) who took on the Dixie Mafia. This was enough of a hit at the time to spawn multiple sequels as well as a short-lived television series. In proof that all “intellectual property” someday comes back, it even spawned an unlikely 2004 reboot (starring The Rock). Is this good? Not sure. The Science of Beer at the Museum of Science and History is back Jan. 14. (Submitted)

Science of Beer at M0SH Central (formerly known as the Pink Palace Museum), Friday:

Taste beer from across the region, learn the science of it and support an area museum. That’s Science of Beer in a gist. The foodie fundraiser is a benefit for the Museum of Science and History’s education and programming and allows attendees the chance to chat with local brewers, attend short lectures and engage with their beers in other ways. Games and food vendors are also a part of the festivities. Guests receive a commemorative glass. Tickets range from $30 (for designated driver member admission) to $50 (for general public admission). Memphis Street Names presentation at Elmwood Cemetery, Saturday:

At this indoor event at Memphis’ famed cemetery, attendees will learn the history behind the city’s street names. Click here for more information. Tickets are $20, but this event has sold out. 1-2 p.m. 824 S. Dudley St. — Perry

Full Moon Bonfire on the banks of the Wolf River (in Rossville), Saturday:

Wolf River Conservancy’s river guides will lead folks in a gathering around a fire pit at the Wolf River access ramp on TN 194, north of Rossville in Fayette County. The conservancy notes that the moon will be in the “waxing gibbous phase with 94% illumination,” and the conservancy will provide hot dogs, s’mor essentials and the fire. Attendees will provide beverages of their choice; they should also bring a small flashlight and chairs. There is no rain date. Memphis Grizzlies vs. Chicago Bulls at FedExForum, Monday

Yes, the Grizzlies play 41 regular-season games a year at FedExForum, but only one is the annual MLK Day showcase, a nationally televised matinee (on TNT) adorned with extra trappings. This year, the trappings include the annual Sports Legacy Awards presentation to former NBA stars Elvin Hayes, Allan Houston and Muggsy Bogues during the game and the annual Earl Lloyd Sports Legacy Symposium, which will be held for season-ticket holders on the practice court before the game and which will be broadcast as part of the Bally Sports local/regional broadcast. It will also include a halftime performance featuring R&B artist Angie Stone and Memphis native and recent “The Voice” runner-up Wendy Moten, backed by Memphis' own Hi Rhythm and the Royal Horns. And, oh yeah, the basketball: Your Memphis Grizzlies are the hottest team in the NBA, winners of 10 consecutive games as this is written. It will be the only visit this season from the Bulls, currently the top-ranked team in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. A marquee day at the gym all-around. Tuesday Family Knights at Memphis Chess Club, Tuesday:

Memphis Chess Club has a new weekly offering for families. Instructors will lead personalized instruction during open play, beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays. At the same time as children are learning chess in the tournament hall space, parents can eat, hang out, or play other games upstairs in the cafe.
