What’s up, Memphis? Today is Tuesday, July 19, and the Memphis Medical District Collaborative and Edge Neighborhood Association will host a Yappy Hour for dogs and their people in the Edge Triangle this evening at 5:30 p.m. There will be ice cream from Kaye’s Pints & Scoops and beer from High Cotton Brewery.
THE NEED TO KNOW
The Memphis Police Department has released new details about the arrest of a man who threatened a mass shooting following a Yo Gotti concert, shown in this photo, at FedExForum. (Mark Weber/Daily Memphian)
Details emerge on mass shooting threat: Elijah Hyman was arrested in the wee hours of Saturday morning after telling police he planned to carry out a mass shooting of people leaving the Yo Gotti and Friends Birthday Bash at FedExForum. A police search of Hyman’s apartment at The Chisca On Main revealed he had made “significant preparations” to carry out a mass shooting. Police found binoculars and firearms next to a broken window facing FedExForum.

County Commission delays: Shelby County commissioners delayed a “no-confidence” vote on County Clerk Wanda Halbert related to her handling of the license plate backlog until its Aug. 8 meeting. The delayed resolution would have also called for a state takeover of license plate distribution. The resolution’s cosponsor, Commissioner Brandon Morrison, said she’d heard reports of progress in the backlog. (For what it’s worth, I finally got my plate in the mail late last week). The commission also delayed a vote on a new minority business plan for county government contracts until the Aug. 8 meeting.

Collierville Police honored: The Collierville Police Department won a state award, partially due to their handling of the mass shooting at Kroger on New Byhalia Road on Sept. 23 of last year. The Tennessee Municipal League’s Excellence in Police Services award also recognized the department’s daily operations. “Hopefully we never have another day like Sept 23. Most days it’s ‘How can we improve the quality of life for our community?’ We do that by building trust every day,” said Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane.

Memphis Grizzlies rookie Kenneth Lofton Jr. (or just “Junior,” as fans call him) played two seasons at Louisiana Tech before signing a two-way deal with the Grizzlies in June after going undrafted. Though he may have been passed over in the draft, the 6-foot-6, 275-pound Lofton was hard to miss in the NBA summer league games earlier this month. In those games, Lofton (who, by the way, is not the son of six-time MLB All-Star Kenny Lofton) nailed 3-point range shots with decent accuracy and had the passing skills to set up his teammates. “A lot of people tell me that I’m fun to watch because I’m so unique,” he said. “I’m just a different type of player than others.”
THE NICE TO KNOW
Bill Ganus and his partners in November 6 Investments LLC plan to restore and repurpose the historic Greyhound Bus Station and Schlitz Brewery site at 525 N. Main St. and the adjacent former Schlitz Brewery horse stable. (Patrick Lantrip/Daily Memphian)
Looking up in Uptown: Construction is expected to begin this summer to transform Uptown’s historic Greyhound Bus Station and Schlitz Brewery buildings into a mixed-use complex with residential housing and commercial space. The developers behind the project plan to retain as much of the buildings’ historical elements as they can. The Daily Memphian’s Neil Strebig took a walking tour of the spaces and found Dixie Greyhound Lines founder (and father of FedEx founder Fred Smith Jr.) James Frederick Smith’s original office in the Greyhound station relatively undisturbed.

Dancing with themselves: If you’re still awake at 9 p.m. tonight, you might want to turn on the TV. Memphis identical twin brothers Demarcus and Jemarcus White, a pair known the Pric3lessTwinz on TikTok, will compete in the season finale of NBC’s dance challenge series, “Dancing with Myself,” this evening. The pair will go up against 11 other contestants in front of a live studio audience as they perform dance routines inspired by social media’s hottest dance crazes.
 David McKinney
New trustee: David McKinney, vice president of communications and public affairs at AutoZone, has been appointed to the University of Memphis board of trustees by Gov. Bill Lee, replacing R. Brad Martin. If approved by the Tennessee General Assembly, McKinney will be the first new board member since the board was created in 2016.
