Memphis got a new police chief last week as the City Council confirmed Mayor Jim Strickland’s choice of Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis to replace retired Director Michael Rallings. Davis’ confirmation came amid accolades from those who have worked with the “rising star” in other cities. At the same time, local advocates for police reform are already giving the new chief 100 days to begin tackling their list of 10 reforms. Meanwhile, a subject on every home and business owner’s mind — property taxes — was addressed by Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. He said the county property tax rate shouldn’t rise above the new lowered rate that is expected based on higher property values under the recent reappraisal. But some county commissioners are exploring how much additional revenue could be generated by a property tax increase on top of the recertified rate.
