The Week in Review

Memphis started down the path — sort of — toward consolidation last week as City Council members approved forming a committee that will determine if the council wants to move forward with a consolidation charter commission.

The joint city-county committee will look at whether there are steps short of consolidating city and county government that should be considered or if the next step should be having the city and county mayors appoint a charter commission.

The county also began looking at redistricting, as an ad hoc committee made its first decisions on drawing new lines for the County Commission and the Shelby County Schools board.

And Memphis City Council member JB Smiley Jr. threw his hat into the ring for the Tennessee governor’s race. Smiley will seek the Democratic nomination for the right to run against likely Republican nominee Bill Lee, who is well-positioned to win the GOP nomination in his bid for a second term. — Metro editor Ron Maxey
