The federal trial of state Sen. Katrina Robinson on charges related to her business, The Healthcare Institute, got underway with opening arguments and early testimony on how Robinson spent some $600,000 in federal grant money secured for the school. Prosecutors say Robinson used the money for personal expenses that included a car, wedding preparations and a divorce. Attorneys for Robinson, who has pleaded not guilty, say no money was spent improperly. Testimony continues this week in a trial that could last up to three weeks. Also last week, a federal judge ruled at week’s end that the mask mandate for Shelby County students in K-12 schools is lawful. The ruling undoes Gov. Bill Lee’s executive order allowing parents to opt-out of the local mask mandate. And finally, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital went into orbit last week as Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant and former patient at the hospital, joined the Inspiration4 crew in earth orbit. — Metro editor Ron Maxey
