The NBA draft in November? Why not?

Usually a rite of early summer, the event that transforms the best college basketball players into highly paid pros was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Memphis Grizzlies don’t have a pick in the first round, but that doesn’t mean nothing will happen. In fact, that’s precisely the time to monitor the draft board.

The NBA also decided to suddenly open up the trade window Monday, with free agency starting up Friday. The Grizzlies’ front office has a lot to consider, with its young core, valuable future picks and possible trade bait. And if another team’s general manager suddenly has a crazy thought, it can cascade into something the Grizzlies might like to maneuver into. Or not.

Two former Memphis Tigers, James Wiseman and Precious Achiuwa are expected to be taken high in the draft, which begins at 6 p.m. Central time.

The high school football playoffs continue, though two local teams had their seasons end prematurely not because of a loss on the field, but because of positive COVID-19 tests.

Speaking of football, the Memphis Tigers are back in action this weekend. They are playing Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Liberty Bowl.
