The Week in Preps

How unusual has this high school football season been? Friday’s featured game will match a team that hasn’t played in a month against a team that didn’t even exist a month ago.

CBHS, which is 4-1 and ranked third in the state in this week’s Division 2-AAA poll, will host the Pure Youth Athletics, which will be making its season — and program — debut. The Brothers last played on Sept. 18 when they defeated Pope John Paul II and have since been on the sidelines due to a combination of a COVID quarantine at the school, SCS teams on the schedule being unable to play and fall break. PURE’s roster is made up of between 30 and 40 SCS transfers, who withdrew from their original schools and joined the program once the TSSAA gave PURE the green light to play its member schools.

The Daily Memphian will be covering that one and coaches and fans at other games are encouraged to Tweet or e-mail their scores, highlights and top performers to @johnvarlas or jvarlas@dailymemphian.com.

Other — more conventional — match-ups Friday include St. George’s visiting ECS, Lausanne hosting Northpoint and its star quarterback Jackson Thomason and Pope John Paul II traveling to Stokes Stadium to take on MUS. — John Varlas
