The Week in Prep Sports

Like everything else in the Shelby-Metro area, high school basketball has taken a back seat to this week’s snowfall. But as soon as the weather heats up, the postseason action will too.

The Division 2-A West Regional tournament, which will feature some of the area’s top teams and players, is on hold and likely won’t resume before Saturday. But when it does, the competition is going to be intense. Second-round games on the boys side feature Fayette Academy visiting Lausanne, ECS hosting Northpoint, Jackson Sacred Heart traveling to take on undefeated FACS and Harding hosting Tipton-Rosemark.

The girls second-round bracket sees Fayette Academy travel to Northpoint and Sacred Heart visit Tipton-Rosemark. Harding will also be at home, as the Lions take on Jackson Trinity Christian.

The games will feature three local players who were named most valuable players of their respective districts this week: Kameron Jones of ECS, Jaxon Toney of Harding and Northpoint’s Leah Jones. All three were also among the city’s leading scorers for the regular season.

Bad weather around the state also forced the postponement of the state individual wrestling tournament this week. The event is now scheduled for Feb. 24-26 at the Chattanooga Convention Center. Class AA-A will compete on Wednesday, Division 2 and girls on Thursday and Class AAA on Friday.

As always, fans, coaches and stat keepers are requested to email or Tweet their top performers to jvarlas@dailymemphian.comor @johnvarlas. — John Varlas
