The Week in Prep Sports

About six weeks prior to Spring Fling, Allison Newman was struggling instead of peaking.

Newman, a senior who is headed to Missouri, wasn’t faring well against the better local competition and was frustrated to the point of possibly pulling the plug on her fine prep career. But a combo business-pleasure trip to Florida prior to regionals got her back on track.

And ended her career in style too, winning the state championship at Spring Fling in her speciality, the 1,600 meters.

Newman is just one of many local athletes who have made their mark so far in Murfreesboro. And The Daily Memphian is your one-stop site for all the scores, highlights, top performers and schedules from the local teams and individuals you care about. — John Varlas
