After a year on the sidelines, Team Thad is back. One of the city’s top grassroots basketball programs, featuring local standouts like Chandler Jackson from CBHS and Bartlett’s Amarr Knox, is in South Carolina competing on the EYBL circuit. Due to travel restrictions throughout the spring, the EYBL regular season is taking place this week with the top teams advancing to next week’s prestigious Peach Jam tournament. Memphis teams have fared well historically at the Peach Jam, finishing runner-up on two occasions. And after missing an opportunity to compete last year due to COVID, coach Norton Hurd’s squad — which also includes some talented out-of-towners like Floridian Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Dia of Nashville — will be looking to make its mark while incorporating some of Memphis’ famed grit and grind on the big stage. On the football field, no one grinds more than Cameron Miller and this week the MAHS standout made his college choice known. He’s headed to the University of Tennessee where he hopes to showcase his playmaking skills in new coach Josh Heupel’s wide-open offense. — John Varlas
