The Week in Prep Sports

Two high school stories from the past week brought the fragility and preciousness of life to the forefront.

At Briarcrest, the football team is off to a terrific start thanks in large part to the efforts of defensive lineman Keyron Crawford. On a recent kayaking expedition, Crawford found himself in real danger and if not for the quick thinking and bravery of two athletes from a rival school, his season — and perhaps even his life — could have ended before it really began.

Ted Anderson, meanwhile, packed a lot of life and a lot of success into his 77 years. First at Hamilton and then at Douglass, he won 518 games and touched countless lives off the basketball court. The colorful coach died Monday in a motorcycle accident.

As always, coaches, stat-keepers and parents are urged to send in their scores, highlights and top performers each game night. Email jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or Tweet @johnvarlas — John Varlas
