Geoff Calkins’ mother Virginia Calkins never lived in Memphis, but she certainly possessed our town’s generous attitude. The spirit was also strong in some past Memphians including Tom Lee and Billy Dunavant, and the heroes honored on Gold Star Mother’s and Families Day. A spirited Greek Festival is back after a COVID hiatus. Longtime Leonard’s Pit Barbecue owner Dan Brown is a smokin’ example of the Spirit of Memphis, and Dominique Worthen, owner of Snkrr Bar, has plenty of soul as he mends soles. Penny Hardaway has created a magical basketball program, and a generous stranger is helping Arlington athlete Bella Wade have a super senior year. Even Ford Motor Co. is drawn to our area.
