Deke Adams in the mix for open Mississippi State job

Not even a month after he was hired as the Memphis defensive line coach, Deke Adams is in the mix for the same job at Mississippi State.

Nothing is official, but Adams is expected to make a jump to the SEC after just three weeks and six days as the Tigers defensive line coach. He would replace Brian Baker, who was  hired by Alabama last week, as the Bulldogs defensive line coach.

Memphis tapped Adams to replace coach Paul Randolph on Jan. 2 after Randolph accepted the defensive line coach job at Texas Tech. Randolph had been with head coach Mike Norvell since he arrived in Memphis in 2015.

Adams spent two seasons at North Carolina under former head coach Larry Fedora. He initially followed Fedora to UNC from Southern Miss where Adams coached three seasons under the now-fired Tar Heels head coach.

Before his final stint in Chapel Hill, Adams coached at East Carolina and South Carolina. He developed several NFL Draft picks and coached now Houston Texan Jadeveon Clowney.

The plan was for Adams to recruit southern Mississippi under Norvell. Memphis will need to replace his recruiting ability and tenacity up front.

Norvell revitalized his defensive staff after several key staff departures, including defensive coordinator Chris Ball. Marshall defensive coordinator Adam Fuller was picked to replace Ball while Kevin Clune was promoted to linebackers coach.

National signing day is Feb. 6, and the coaches who are staying with Norvell are out on the road recruiting to finish the class of 2019 and kick off the class of 2020. This weekend is a big weekend for official visitors.
