Memphis Mayor Paul Young revealed plans last week for the city to buy the Sheraton Memphis Downtown Hotel for $22 million. The city would issue bonds to pay for the deal, which requires Memphis City Council approval. Young told The Daily Memphian the city felt compelled to purchase the Sheraton to protect its more than $200 million investment in the Renasant Convention Center. The hotel and the convention center are connected via a walkway across North Main Street.

Two outgoing school board members sent letters outlining their concerns with Memphis-Shelby County Schools superintendent Marie Feagins’ leadership style and communication with the board. The board’s former chair, Althea Greene, called Feagins’ hire “a mistake.” Greene’s letter was sent Thursday, Sept. 26, the same day the board met to discuss rubric for evaluating the superintendent’s performance.

The federal trial for the former officers accused in the beating death of Tyre Nichols has entered its fourth week. The prosecution rested its case Thursday, and two of the three defendants rested theirs Monday morning, indicating the case should be handed over to the jury soon. And last week saw the conclusion of another high-profile trial, this one in Shelby County Criminal Court, with a conviction in the murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, real name Adolph Thornton Jr. The case isn’t fully resolved though; two other men accused in the killing, including one who testified against his co-defendant, still face charges. Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said their cases would be resolved “by trial or by plea” in the future.
