Welcome back to the Tigers Football Insider, where we bring you the latest news and analysis from The Daily Memphian’s Steven Johnson each week.
Texas cornerback Dorian Friend has been on Memphis throughout his recruitment, even while committed to AAC rival Houston.
After committing to the Cougars in January, Memphis offered Friend the next month and was able to convince him to take an official visit to campus.
Friend, a 5-foot-9 defensive back, was in town from June 4-6. About a week after completing his visit to Memphis, Friend decommitted from Houston.
The implications for the Tigers are huge. Rated the No. 83 corner in the country, 247Sports projects Friend as a Power Five starter.
Adding a player like that would be huge for Memphis’ 2022 recruiting class. The Tigers should like their chances as Coach Ryan Silverfield is already establishing a mini-pipeline with Friend’s 7-on-7 team, Pro Process Academy.
In the last cycle the Tigers signed two members of PPA with Alvin ‘JP’ Martin and Greg Rubin. Rubin’s older brother, Terrell, is also one of the coaches.
With Friend officially on the market, expect Memphis to turn up the heat even more on one of the best cornerbacks in the Lone Star State.
