Welcome back to your Grizzlies Insider, where we deliver the latest NBA news and analysis straight from Daily Memphian staffers Drew Hill, Chris Herrington and Geoff Calkins right into your inbox.

Before the game, 901 FC team president Craig Unger took a stroll around AutoZone Park, stopping to provide a little bit of context as to why Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins was selected to participate in the first ceremonial guitar smash of the season.

“We want some of that playoff magic to rub off on us, too,” Unger said. “We are searching for our first appearance in the playoffs.”

In just his second season with the Grizzlies, Jenkins brought the team to its first playoff appearance in four years. Now it’s time for 901 FC, which made its debut in 2019, to do the same in its third season.

Believe it or not, Jenkins is a major soccer fan. He wakes up early to watch games, and is keeping an eye on the current EURO 2020 tournament overseas.

He’s pretty dang good at smashing guitars, too. He displayed that Wednesday night with a herculean obliteration of the solid-black instrument in front of thousands of fans.

“I’ll give myself and A-,” the coach said.
