The currently vacant Northside High School building in Klondike may become a mixed-use development.
Though what that looks like is still undecided. There’s also no cost-estimate on the project.
Northside Renaissance Inc., the nonprofit group behind the redevelopment plan, is seeking community input from community and neighborhood residents before proposing a final plan.
On Wednesday, July 14, Northside Renaissance held a community Zoom meeting attended by 60 people. During the 90-minute session, they informed them of the project’s status and answered various questions from residents.
Three years ago, Neighborhood Preservation Inc. – one of the partners on the project – commissioned a study by Chicago-based architecture firm Studio Gang on possible reuses for the vacant building.
Some of the possibilities presented in the study were vocational training, job resource center, performing arts auditorium or living and studio space.
In the short-term, environmental abatement work is set to begin at Northside later this month to remove asbestos and other environmental hazards inside the building. That’s expected to take four to five months.
Northside Renaissance is emphasizing a collaborative approach as one most likely to see this redevelopment occur – and become successful long-term.
“To make this project work and to grow our community, it can’t be what it used to be, but it can be better,” said Quincey Morris, Northside Renaissance board president. “We’re asking everybody to be a partner in this project.”
