The Memphis Tigers just landed two commitments from Chandler and Johnathan Lawson, according to a tweet from the brothers’ uncle.
The two are sons of former Memphis assistant Keelon Lawson. Chandler, who entered the transfer portal earlier this month, played two seasons at Oregon and started in 20 games.
Johnathan helped lead Houston to the TSSAA Class AAA state championship this season. He’s ranked No. 91 overall in the 247Sports Composite and the No. 19 small forward nationally in the class of 2021.
Johnathan Lawson was originally slated to sign with Oregon and play with his older brother, but he was released from his letter of intent last week.
Chandler is a 6-foot-8 forward who can play either forward spot or center for the Tigers. He was also a Top 100 prospect coming out of high school and should help Memphis out tremendously in the front court.

Johnathan joins a recruiting class that was already ranked No. 7 in the country. Coach Penny Hardaway made sure to address the wing spot, as Johnathan is the third to sign along with Josh Minott and John Camden.
The Lawsons’ older brothers, Dedric and K.J. Lawson, played for Memphis under Josh Pastner and Tubby Smith. Their tenures didn’t end well, with both transferring after their father was demoted from his assistant role once Smith took the job.
It took a while, but those fences have been mended thanks to Hardaway’s longstanding relationship with the family. Both of the older Lawson brothers played for Hardaway’s AAU team, Team Penny, and eventually at East High as well.
While Chandler and Johnathan weren’t a package deal, playing together meant a great deal to both.
Arkansas and TCU were among the main competition, but Hardaway was able to beat out Power Five schools for their signatures.
Memphis could be looking to add one more player via the transfer portal, but as it stands, Hardaway has had an impressive offseason haul.
Along with a Top 10 recruiting class, the Tigers landed Davion Warren from Hampton and Earl Timberlake from Miami (Florida).
Expectations will be high once again for the talent-rich Tigers, who captured the NIT championship in March.
Unlike in 2019, this time Memphis has the experience to match the talent.
