Manhunt following shootings at three locations ends with suspect’s death
A man believed to have killed four female victims and critically injured another Saturday evening was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot early Sunday morning.
The Memphis Police Department issued an alert late Saturday, Nov. 18, that they were looking for a 52-year-old man after separate fatal shootings in Whitehaven and Southeast Memphis.
The shootings occurred at three addresses and the suspect, Mavis Christian Jr., fled each scene in a white Chevrolet Malibu, Tennessee, license 390-BHTM, police said.
Around 5:43 p.m., three female victims were shot at 3636 Fieldlark Drive in Whitehaven. Two were killed and one left critically injured.
Around 6:40 p.m., one female victim was shot and killed at 5050 Warrington Road in Southeast Memphis.
Around 9:22 p.m., one female victim was shot and killed at 196 Howard Drive in Whitehaven.
MPD released a statement Sunday morning regarding the shootings.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless shootings on Saturday, November 18th, resulting in the deaths of four innocent family members and a fifth victim critically injured,” the statement said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones as our community grieve more lives taken by domestic violence.”
MPD Public Information Officer Christopher Williams said in an email that three of the deceased were adults and the other was 13.
The female victim who was critically injured was 15, Williams said.
According to court records, Christian had multiple arrests for assault. Most recently, he was arrested for domestic assault and aggravated assault of his estranged wife and teenage daughter in 2018.
Memphis Police issued an update via social media at 4:16 a.m. stating the suspect was located. The statement Sunday said he was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Our department continues to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents, and incidents like these shake us all to our core,” said MPD chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis in a statement released Sunday.
“We appreciate our community’s patience, engagement and support during these challenging times, and we look forward to creating a safer Memphis together.”
To assist with the manhunt, the city sent text and phone messages through its Memphis Alerts system near midnight Saturday. The message is copied below:
Mavis Christian Jr., DOB: 9/15/1971. He is driving a white 2017 Chevrolet Malibu bearing TN Tag #390-BHTM. Christian Jr. is wanted for multiple shootings of family members in the Memphis Area and should be considered armed and dangerous. If you see him or his vehicle, please call Crime Stoppers immediately at 901-528-CASH.
This multi-jurisdiction manhunt consisted of local, state and federal agencies who actively searched for the suspect.
