“One of the best local news sites in the country.” - Politico

Want to be part of the future of local journalism? Want to make an impact with your work every week and be part of a thriving - and growing - newsroom? The Daily Memphian offers you a unique opportunity to become part of one of the country’s leading local news sites in one of the country’s most dynamic and diverse cities.

The Daily Memphian is one of the largest non-profit local newsrooms in America, with about 40 full-time journalists and 20 regular contributors. We are a locally led, locally owned, fully independent online news site founded in 2018 and focused on all aspects of the Memphis area, from local government and sports to food, arts & culture, business, education, neighborhoods and much more. Our full-time staff is more than 50% female and 25% people of color.

We’re looking for the following positions:

Experienced journalists

The Daily Memphian is always looking for veteran journalists to join our team, whether in a full-time or freelance capacity. Candidates would have extensive beat experience of at least more than six years, as well as a background in enterprise or investigative reporting.

Interested candidates should email Mary Cashiola, editorial director, at mcashiola@dailymemphian.com.

Spring, Summer 2027 Interns

The Daily Memphian seeks candidates for 2027 internships: General Assignment for Spring 2027, Business for Summer 2027 and Metro for Summer 2027.

Applicants can be either college students or recent college graduates. Interns must work in The Daily Memphian offices in East Memphis. These are not hybrid positions. Hours will be worked in the office and at assignments.

Reliable transportation and a driver’s license are required; interns must be able to respond quickly to breaking news in person.

Previous experience at a college publication or equivalent (with frequent written articles) is strongly recommended.

Pay is $15 an hour. The internship is 20 hours per week for 10 weeks for the spring internship, and 40 hours per week for 10 weeks for the summer internships. The start and end dates are flexible.

General Assignment means the intern must — with enthusiasm — cover a variety of stories. That can include, but is not limited to, attending and covering a Memphis City Council or Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, a park groundbreaking, a feature on a local band, or a new rugby field.

The GA internship will not include regular sports coverage.

The GA intern will work with multiple editors.

The Metro intern can be expected to cover areas in any of the following: education, public safety, government and community events.

The Business intern will cover a variety of business stories.

During the internship, interns are expected to pitch regularly. Interns will also be assigned articles.

A successful applicant will have strong writing skills, enthusiasm for exploring a career in journalism and a spirit of collaboration.

Internships will begin with a day of orientation.

To apply, send a resume and at least three writing samples to Elle Perry, eperry@dailymemphian.com. Please indicate which internship/s you are applying for.
