Shelby County’s 201 Poplar is a jail, not a prison. It’s meant for short-term stays and pretrial detention, but there are some detainees who never get out.
The Shelby County District Attorney General’s office recused itself from the Gershun Freeman investigation, and on Feb. 17, Nashville District Attorney Glenn Funk’s Office took over.
Preliminary information indicates a detainee at Shelby County Jail is in critical condition after an altercation with his cellmate.
It is still unknown how the 24-year-old inmate died.
Due to an ongoing investigation, the name of the inmate and the exact circumstances of the death are unknown, a spokesperson said.
