Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a “watch” for the drainage basin — located in parts of DeSoto and Tate counties — elevating its risk status from an “alert.”
The downgrade to “alert” comes a week after a flash flood watch was lifted for the area in the wake of potential breach conditions identified last month
The threat of flooding at Arkabutla Lake because of a potential breach at the nearby dam has decreased, leading to the lifting of a flood watch.
“We have not seen anything on our end that would say, ‘Hey, this is imminent failure.’ But it’s still an emergency, and we’re still treating it as such because of the consequences.”
Area experts are closely watching Arkabutla Dam at the DeSoto-Tate county line to make sure a foundation problem does not contribute to a breach.
