At the 50th Stone Soul Picnic, gospel singers and R&B performers will blend as the owner of Memphis’ first Black-owned radio station is honored.
The “Rock and Roll Granny,” the man who went down to the Crossroads, a titan of Memphis radio and three noted soul/R&B singers of different stripes and generations are the new inductees of the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
He was inducted in the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame in 2023.
The board was recently expanded to include Bernice Donald, former U.S. appellate judge, Carol Johnson-Dean, former MCS superintendent, and Dr. Todd Motley, a local physician.
Gilliam’s influence allowed many Black voices to be heard through WLOK.
For 45 years, Art Gilliam has provided a voice for the Black community through radio station WLOK. The station’s offices are undergoing renovations at Talbot Avenue and South Second Street.
