Like many parts of the world, the Memphis area is seeing a COVID uptick. What differs now is the virus has become endemic like the flu and RSV.
The most common variant in the U.S. now is the highly contagious HV.1 strain, which accounts for about 30% of new COVID-19 cases.
COVID hasn’t gone away, but experts say the trend is in the right direction. Related story:
Though the numbers are going up, the amount of cases is lower than at previous times during the pandemic, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine said.
Flu season typically peaks from December to February but Memphis-area emergency rooms are already treating an unusually large number of influenza patients.
“The difference is that we know about this infection, it’s been here since 1950,” said an infectious disease expert. “We’re so far ahead with monkeypox, compared to where we were with COVID. But it makes it just truly a different type of problem altogether.”
How fast the vaccine is available to the general public will depend on how many people in the priority categories decide to get it.
