More improvements are coming to internal controls, procurement, human resources and cybersecurity processes at Memphis-Shelby County Schools, Superintendent Roderick Richmond told board members.
That alleged abuse is largely associated with a single custodial contract that received elected board approval in 2022.
“I’m stating unequivocally that I made some large mistakes in budgeting,” Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson said.
“Something’s going to come out of this audit. And what we’re going to have to be able to talk about — and it’s not good, bad or indifferent — is how we strengthen our internal controls,” a top official told school board members.
The money to hire and pay an accounting firm to conduct the audit is part of Gov. Bill Lee’s amended budget proposal.
