The new instances uncovered in public records bring to 46 the number of substantiated instances of excessive force involving officers at 201 Poplar.
The nine Shelby County corrections officers indicted for their alleged roles in the death of an inmate last year made their first court appearances Friday, Oct. 27.
The suit’s amended complaint also alleges that some of the officers allegedly involved and indicted for their role in Freeman’s death are still working there, even as an ongoing criminal case plays out against them.

The 31 incidents occurred between June 2018 and September 2021, and they involved at least 27 correctional officers.
“Tomorrow will mark the one year anniversary of Gershun Freeman’s death, but tomorrow also will mark new change in the city of Memphis,” said Kareem Ali, an investigator with civil rights attorney Ben Crump’s law firm.
More than 31,000 Memphians had voted early through Tuesday, Sept. 26, passing the totals for the same period during 2015 and 2019 city elections.
