The Mississippi Legislature passed a bill allowing municipalities to allow low-speed vehicles like golf carts on public roads. Hernando officials are allowing those vehicles to operate in the DeSoto County city.
After a long discussion and some adjustments, Hernando officials have approved the first food truck locations in the city.
Hernando residents could soon pay a higher sanitation fee under a newly negotiated contract, but Mayor Chip Johnston said the city could start enforcing penalties for shortfalls in the duties.
Hernando aldermen approved allowing food trucks in the DeSoto County city, but not at the expense of existing brick-and-mortar restaurants.
“Last year, we gave a 5% raise to employees, but the cost of living rose 8%,” Mayor Chip Johnson said. “We need to stay competitive … We don’t want them to leave for other cities.”
A lane of McIngvale Road in Hernando will be closed to traffic soon as construction begins on the new Hernando High.
The 251-acre mixed-use development called Delta Landing was considered by Hernando this week as neighbors expressed some reservations about the project.
