Lawson’s autobiography, coauthored by Memphian Emily Yellin, had a Memphis launch Friday, Feb. 20, at the National Civil Rights Museum.
Lawson organized the sanitation workers strike that fatefully drew Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis. Lawson said he was at first paralyzed and forever saddened by King’s assassination.
'My heart is heavy at the passing of this great foot soldier of the movement and congressman for the people,' says the president of the National Civil Rights Museum. 'In his honor, we’ll vote like our lives depend on it, because they do. '
The interfaith gathering came 51 years to the day of the original gathering. Rev. James Lawson, who spoke at the original Memphis Cares, said Sunday Memphis can be "a different kind of city a generation from now."
During the annual observance, civil rights veteran and icon Rev. James Lawson also talked about his invitation for King to come to Memphis in behalf of sanitation workers and the "politics of assassination."
