The mother of a man who was fatally shot by Memphis Police Department officers in December 2022 has retained an attorney in her federal lawsuit against the city. The DA’s did not file any criminal charges against the involved officers.
The mother of 20-year-old Atlanta native Jaylin McKenzie, who was killed in December 2022 when visiting Memphis, has filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Memphis and various police department officials.
“For our office to bring criminal charges, we must be confident that we can prove an actual violation of a criminal statute beyond a reasonable doubt,” Mulroy said. “We don’t have sufficient evidence to do that here.”
Jaylin McKenzie, 20, was shot by an officer after police tried to stop a vehicle in Southeast Memphis shortly before midnight on Dec. 16, 2022.
