The new scooters that debuted Wednesday in Crosstown with seats and bigger tires use a network of Bike Share stations around the city and are part of the move to keep more scooters in bike lanes and off sidewalks.
As Explore Bike Share marks its first year in May, City Hall will weigh proposals by the nonprofit, two electric scooter shared mobility companies and any other companies that want permanent city permits to operate within Memphis.
The city has plans to add a median strip, bike lanes and landscaping on the block of Union Avenue between Marshall and Manassas streets. The changes will connect with a longer stretch of road on Manassas that is something of a proving ground for lots of similar features.
The federal government is shutdown but plans continue by local transportation agencies for new federal funding starting in 2020. The projects range from repaving the roads most used by the city's heaviest truck traffic to better pedestrian crossings.
