Decertification process for fellow officer Preston Hemphill was also placed on hold.
Action is delayed pending completion of a federal investigation. In the meantime, Hemphill will not be able to serve as a police officer anywhere in the state until he is removed from suspended status.
Hemphill, who joined the SCORPION Unit in October 2022, had been on the unit for about three months before Tyre Nichols’ fatal encounter with him and other SCORPION officers.
The request is under consideration, but Hemphill has not yet been decertified.
