Soulsville Foundation CEO Pat Mitchell Worley joined Eric Barnes on “The Sidebar” to talk about the Stax Museum’s first ever Power of Music Honors.
Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, better known as Chuck D as part of hip-hop group Public Enemy, received a Soulsville Foundation Power of Music award Friday and spoke about the power of music to change the world.
Perhaps few are as well-suited to be the head of Soulsville as Pat Mitchell Worley, co-host of “Beale Street Caravan,” former communications director of the Memphis Music Foundation, one-time hard rock DJ and protégé of Deanie Parker.
Stax Music Academy’s executive director and a longtime local arts advocate is set to head the Memphis music foundation beginning in August.
The grant will allow the organization to recover from the pandemic and can be used to save jobs and to fund various operations and promotional efforts to encourage attendance and participation.
“Solid Gold Soul: The Best of the Rest from the Stax Museum” is on show now. The exhibit features staff-selected artifacts from Stax’s vast archives, including Isaac Hayes’ desk from the 1970s.
Children who go on to become successful adults are more likely to have had some arts education enrich their experiences on that path. Studies show the correlation between arts education, academic achievement and compassion for others.
The museum will require staff and guests to wear masks, and will have cashless transaction points and sneeze guards.
The Stax school's 20th anniversary celebration will include talent shows, a public Black History Month production, a three-day livestream Memphis music marathon and a huge birthday bash that coincides with International Music Day.
